Understanding Social Engineering
At its core, social engineering is psychological manipulation. Attackers use deception, urgency, fear, or even friendliness to trick individuals into breaking standard security practices. They might impersonate a trusted colleague, pose as IT support, or pretend to be a customer in distress. These tactics are designed to lower a victim’s guard and gain access to confidential information or systems.
Social engineering doesn’t always begin with a technical breach—it often starts with a simple email, a phone call, or a message on social media. An attacker may request login credentials, ask for sensitive data, or encourage someone to click a malicious link. Because the approach feels personal and familiar, victims often don’t realize they’ve been targeted until it’s too late.
